تعریف کلمه متافیزیک بسیار سخت است. سکه‌های قرن بیستمی مانند «فرا زبان» و «متا فلسفه» این تصور را ایجاد می‌کند که متافیزیک مطالعه‌ای است که به نوعی فراتر از فیزیک است، مطالعه‌ای اختصاص داده شده به موضوعاتی که فراتر از دغدغه‌های دنیوی نیوتن، انیشتین و هایزنبرگ است. این تصور اشتباه است. واژه متافیزیک از عنوان جمعی از چهارده کتاب ارسطو گرفته شده است که ما در حال حاضر تصور می کنیم متافیزیک ارسطو را تشکیل می دهند . خود ارسطو این کلمه را نمی دانست.
